The
Production Type Index (PTI) and
Estimated Transmitting Ability (ETA) are two indexes that are built on the USDA
Production and
Type evaluations. The indexes are based on complex formulas that provide a number that can be used to rank proven animals (PTIs) and young stock (ETAs) as to their relative ability to pass improvements on to their offspring.
The
Index Search page gives you a lot of flexibility in searching, filtering and sorting the available data. Basically, there higher the index value, the higher your chances are of seeing improvements in the offspring of these animals. There are 2 flavors of
PTIs and
ETAs:
- 2:1 - PTI 2:1 and ETA 2:1 are weighted 2 to 1 production over type
- 1:2 - PTI 1:2 and ETA 1:2 are weighted 2 to 1 type over production
You can make the decision of whether an emphasis of on production or type is appropriate for you breeding program. The
Index Search page is a good first step in deciding which animals might be worth further research.
TopEdit2 - Filters
The
Index Search page has a very simple but flexible group of filters for searching through the available index records. Included are standard
Herdbook/Breed and
Sex filters as well as a
ListBy filter for for controlling emphasis and intial sorting of returned data. This
ListBy filter is set at
PTI 2:1 the first time you enter the page but can be changed.

TopEdit2.1 - Name Starts With
The
Name Starts With can be used to find animals by herdname or any starting string regardless of the their PTI or ETA values. This option displays a textbox and a
Find button. Enter the text you'd like to search for in the textbox and click the
Find button.
TopEdit2.2 - Name Contains
The
Name Contains can be used to find any string within a
ADGA Registered Name regardless of the their PTI or ETA values. This option displays a textbox and a
Find button. Enter the text you'd like to search for in the textbox and click the
Find button.
TopEdit2.3 - PTI 2:1
The
PTI 2:1 option returns all records with PTI21 values greater than or equal to zero.
TopEdit2.4 - PTI 1:2
The
PTI 1:2 option returns all records with PTI12 values greater than or equal to zero.
TopEdit2.5 - ETA 2:1
The
ETA 2:1 option returns all records with ETA21 values greater than or equal to zero.
TopEdit2.6 - ETA 1:2
The
ETA 1:2 option returns all records with ETA12 values greater than or equal to zero.
TopEdit2.7 - Superior Genetics
The
Superior Genetics option returns all records with SG or SGCH designations as well as of the PTI and index values the animal might have.
